ADDICTED TO LOVE (R) **

Reviewed May 25, 1997 - Check out the Addicted to Love web site.

Addicted to Love is one of those romantic comedies that relies as much on its stars' charisma as it does on the details of plot development.  Sam (Matthew Broderick) and Maggie (Meg Ryan) have just both recently been dumped by their girl/boyfriends Linda and Anton (Kelly Preston and Tcheky Karyo), who now happen to be seeing each other.  Sam wants Linda back; Maggie just wants revenge.

With both Sam and Maggie out to spy on their ex-beaus, the two happen to end up in the same abandoned building across the street from Anton's apartment.  Simultaneously sharing their pain and scheming their plots, Sam and Maggie set out to break up the newly formed relationship across the street, and to wonderfully funny results.  Broderick, who's expertise seems to be playing the "nice guy" in absurd circumstances, and Ryan, who's perfected the "tough cookie with a weak spot" act, come through with loads of effervescent charm.  And, even as the actions of Sam and Maggie border on lunatic throughout this film, Broderick and Ryan somehow manage to make it work--and thank goodness, too!!

Addicted to Love is all at once refreshingly light, mischievously funny, and touchingly romantic.  Broderick's conversion from lovesick puppy to revenge-driven schemer is a pleasure to watch, as is Ryan's wall-pounding, motorcycle-riding persona.  Of course, if you're not a fan of either Broderick or Ryan you may not agree with all that, but if you are, Addicted to Love is definitely one to see.  I guess the old saying is true, sometimes revenge really is sweet...
