DAYLIGHT (PG-13)

Reviewed December 7, 1996 - Check out the Daylight website.

I'll be brief about this one.  Daylight stars Sylvester Stallone as Kit Latura, a former Medical Services chief who sets out to save a group of people (See the picture above?  Yeah, them...) trapped in an explosion-damaged tunnel between Manhattan and New Jersey.  These people are stuck, the water level's rising, the air's getting thin, and the structure's collapsing...how do they get out?

I think a key element to the success of any movie of this type is having characters that the audience can empathize with.  We need to care if these people live or die; otherwise the movie's simply a special effects and last-minute escape-scene display.  Well, unfortunately Daylight is just that--a predictable disaster-escape movie that really fails to draw much emotional response from the audience.  To blame: one of the most whining, cowardly, and unlikeable casts of "victims" I have ever seen assembled in one film.  Really, folks, half of these people don't deserve to be rescued, and though Stallone does a fair job playing the hero/rescuer, it doesn't make up for the very weak supporting cast (and equally weak dialog) that pervades this movie.  What's that light at the end of the tunnel?  After seeing this movie, you probably won't care...

ElwoodPDowd@webtv.net gives this movie  star: "I usually like Sly's movies (I own Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, etc.) but alas, this one is a dud. You're right about the supporting characters, Leonard, and the biggest problem is that the story idea and dialogue never "held water". This is definitely one movie that NEVER should've seen the light of day!" (2/7/97)
