DOWN TO EARTH (PG-13)

Reviewed February 28, 2001 - Check out the Down To Earth Website.

Studio Synopsis: Lance (Chris Rock) is a budding comedian who is hit by a bus and dies before his time. Wishing to return to earth, but unable to inhabit his former body, he is placed in the corpse of a rich, white Manhattan mogul. Living in the body of a callous old white man would be bizarre enough for Lance without falling in love with Sontee (Regina King), the beautiful woman publicly battling Wellington's company at the same time. And as if that wasn't enough, he's got to deal with the love affair between Wellington's wife and his personal assistant, and their plot to have him killed. Can reincarnation add to self-discovery, true love and a better stand up routine? Lance Barton is about to find out.

Fuzzydog Review: Good comedy combined with a weak script and bad acting make for a sadly mediocre movie...and we have Down to Earth to prove it!! A remake of Warren Beatty's greatly superior Heaven Can Wait (1978), Down to Earth puts Chris Rock in the classic fish-out-of-water environment with very limited success. Yes, there are some genuinely funny Chris Rock moments scattered throughout this 95-minute fantasy/comedy, but the plot, production and performances all fall embarrassingly flat. Newsflash: Chris Rock can't act!! It's too bad too, because the premise of this film can work (and has before). Guess sometimes reincarnation (especially reincarnating old films) just ain't all it's cracked up to be...
