THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - Sp. Edition (PG) *****

Reviewed March 22, 1997 - Check out the Empire Strikes Back web site.

Back for more!  The Empire Strikes Back, the second film in the Star Wars trilogy, continues where Star Wars left off.  Starting with the Rebel Alliance stationed at the desolate planet Hoth, and with Darth Vader in mad pursuit of Luke Skywalker, Empire continues to play out the Jedi story.  This time, we're treated to an additional cast of strange and endearing creatures, most notably Yoda, the 800 year old Jedi master who (excuse me for saying this) sounds a lot like Fozzy Bear. Empire also continues to flesh out the conflict between the good side and the dark side of the Force, complicating matters by revealing Vader as Skywalker's long-lost father.

For many, The Empire Strikes Back is the best film of the Star Wars Trilogy, and with the additional touches offered by this "Special Edition", it is even stronger.  It doesn't matter if you've seen it before and you know what's going to happen next, this movie (and indeed the whole Trilogy) will manage to surprise and entertain.  Excellent...a definite must see while it's still in theaters.

rfksecond2@cs.com gives this movie ***** stars: "This is the best Star Wars film ever. Almost the best movie ever. The first Star Wars sucked like fungus, Return of the Jedi was great, I haven't seen Phantom Menace yet, and the Emperor Strikes Back was a masterpiece." (6/19/00)

mw686@gre.ac.uk gives this movie ***** stars: "Well, what can I say, f****n' A. Rock and Roll. Watching the Star Wars trilogy on acid has been one of my all time favourite activities. The Empire Strikes back was perhaps the most groovey of the three films, as I really like the way Yoda starts freaking out. Luke's head is like a flower, just floating on the breeze, man.Taking in and using all that force. <<I am Will's mate>> I reckon anyone who likes Star wars should try to learn Kung Fu or something - Chi energy is the force, and we could all be more Jedi like if we had some martial arts discipline. Of course, we must also take acid so that we can see our very own Yoda's etc. I swear - get a load of people to do acid then watch star wars. Go out and trip on that star wars buzz. ( will again )Yeah man, do it." (12/7/98)

David gives this movie ***** stars: "What a way to add to the Star Wars Trilogy! This was easily the best of the trilogy for a number of reasons. 1. The Battle of Hoth - now this battle was just brilliant! Lucas really put his head down and worked on this and it payed off. It blows away any other Star Wars battle and any battle from any action film. This started the movie off in the perfect way! 2. Han Solo ( Harrison Ford ) - I think this is Ford's best performance in any film that he has done. I LOVED his one liners that were hilarious. Especially when he argues with Leia and talks about his arrogant and beautiful self. What a sleezeball ! But you like him more in this film than the first and third and he is really funny to watch! 3. Vader and the fight with Luke - I enjoyed how Vader has a deeper side. This movie has a lot of feeling to it as well as the great action. His lightsaber fight with Vader was excellent and I was shocked to find out that he was Luke's father. 4. Boba Fett - His first appearance! He is my favourite character in these movies and a brilliant one he is. His costume is the coolest and just looking at him you know that he will be cool. He was at Vader's right hand and he is really clever. Go Boba!! 5. Yoda - Now if this isn't a brilliant character with brilliant lines what is? He is hilarious! Frank Oz was the perfect choice for the voice ( He also does the voice of Grover on Sesame Street ). Yoda and his laughs and his lines are all very special to this film and really brings it's rating up. I love his lines, "Looking? Found someone I would say, hmmmm? Hee-hee-hee!" and this one, "Take you to him I will!" I love Yoda! 6. The Ending - it was much better than the first! It leaves you in suspense for the next one and it has an impact on you. After it, I wanted to see Jedi straight away. The Empire Strikes Back is a brilliant film! It's the best of the Trilogy and is worth an easy 5 stars!" (1/24/98)

This is a much darker movie than the other two and I think it is the best of the trilogy. This movie sets the stage for its sequel, Return of the Jedi." (9/2/97)
