"Is this Clarice...?"

HANNIBAL (R)

Reviewed February 11, 2001 - Check out the Hannibal Website.

Studio Synopsis: Hannibal is set in Florence, Italy, a decade after the events of Silence of the Lambs, in which psychopath Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) was interviewed by FBI agent Clarice Starling (originally played by Jodie Foster) while in the custody of a maximum-security prison. Then he escaped. Hannibal picks up where that film left off--with the deranged Lecter now free as a bird in Italy, and Starling still on his trail. A terrifyingly horrific story based on the novel by Thomas Harris, the film takes viewers on a sickening journey through Lecter's violent, cannibalistic mind.

Fuzzydog Review: Less psychological thriller and more gruesome shocker, Hannibal, under the direction of Ridley Scott (Gladiator) takes on a very different flavor from its award winning film predecessor.  With Hopkins back at his evil, mischievous ways and Moore capably stepping in where Foster left off, this film delivers a different kind of terror as the cat-and-mouse between Lecter and Starling begins to go both ways.  Who's looking for whom, here?  There's the FBI (Starling and her boss, played by Ray Liotta), there's Italian police detective Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini), there's revenge-minded Mason (a surviving victim of Lecter's, played by Gary Oldman), and everyone's after everyone else.  All the murders (and the meals) along the way just add to the fun, with Hopkins happily carrying the film to its twisted, gory conclusion.  Is Hannibal better than Silence?  Nope.  But it's hard to say that it's worse either.  This is a different film with a completely flavor--slick, stylish, in your face--and almost worth watching just to see Hopking bring an infamously disturbing character back to life once more.
