From Kevin Williamson, the same screenwriter who treated us to last year's entertaining hit Scream, comes I Know What You Did Last Summer, another horror film that aims to scare us right out of our seats. This time the terror focuses on four teenagers (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, and Freddie Prinze, Jr.) involved in a hit-and-run accident one July 4th, only to discover a year later that someone...well...knows what they did that summer. The teenagers' troubles start mysteriously with a cryptic, unsigned note, but it quickly becomes clear that someone's out for these teens' lives.
Without spoiling any of the plot details, I Know What You Did Last Summer is basically a part cat-and-mouse, part slasher flick adventure that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. As you'd expect, there's a handful of scenes that will make you jump, but unfortunately there are also several relatively long stretches where things get pretty dry. In addition, some elements of what made Scream such a success last year (e.g. characters who know "the rules" of horror flicks) don't exist here. Nope, these helpless teens make every mistake in the book and re-enact every cliche in the horror genre, making their characters both highly predictable and (at times) somewhat annoying. The killer (a Gorton's Fisherman with a giant hook) for his part is sufficiently menacing, but will probably not go down in history as one of your Jason or Freddy Kruger-level slashers.
All in all, I Know What You Did Last Summer is good for a handful of scares, but not much more. Those who are hoping for the same fun and originality of last year's Scream may be disappointed, but those who just need a few "boo!" experiences may find this film just right for this Halloween season.
