THE MUMMY RETURNS (PG-13)

Reviewed May 12, 2001 - Check out The Mummy Returns Website.

Studio Synopsis: The Mummy Returns is set in 1935, 10 years after the events of the first film. Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) is now married to Evelyn (Rachel Weisz), and the couple have settled in London, where they are raising their 9-year-old son Alex (played by screen newcomer Freddie Boath). When a chain of events finds the corpse of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) resurrected in the British Museum, the mummy Imhotep walks the earth once more, determined to fulfill his quest for immortality. But another force has also been set loose in the world...one born of the darkest rituals of ancient Egyptian mysticism, and even more powerful than Imhotep. When these two forces clash, the fate of the world will hang in the balance, sending the O'Connells on a desperate race to save the world from unspeakable evil, and rescue their son before it is too late.

Fuzzydog Review: Picking up from where 1999's The Mummy left off, The Mummy Returns is one absolutely frantic, special effects laden spectacle that kicks up a lot of sand but eventually falls flat.  Fraser, Weisz and Vosloo again deliver that campy, B-film feel that made the original Mummy so entertaining, but this sequel is one of those sad cases which prove that bigger budgets and more special effects do not necessarily make a better movie.  Warning to those planning to see The Mummy Returns without having seen the original The Mummy first: don't do it.  This is a sequel that requires a fairly strong recollection of the original film in order to catch all the plot twists and inside jokes, but it's also a sequel that never quite lives up to the fun and entertainment value provided by the original.  Classic home video fare, but not too much more than that...

gilligans_isle_411@yahoo.com gives this movie  stars: "The movie was too predictable. The end fight scene with The Rock as The Scorpion King was to obvious about being computer animated. Sequels are never as good as the originals" (8/24/01)

darth_davo@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "The Mummy Returns oozes cliche, oozes bad script, and oozes bad acting. Throw in some redundant action scenes and some humour that doesnt even work, and you've got yourself this 'Hollywood Blockbuster'. Bah Humbug !" (6/9/01)

wes_red01@yahoo.com gives this movie  stars: "I loved this movie! The stars were great, new and old, and the special affects were great! This movie was just as great as the first one, and just as suspenseful! " (5/5/01)
