"I think my dad likes your mom..."

ONE FINE DAY (PG)

Reviewed December 15, 1996

One Fine Day stars Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney as two harried single-parents who fail to drop their children (one child each) off to school one day, and find themselves with the dual task of trying to babysit their kids as they go through their workday.  The kids stay with one parent, then the other, then with the other again, as they bounce from one mini-adventure to the other, and as the newly-introduced parents develop an odd love-hate-love-hate-love-hate (well, you get the picture) relationship during the course of the day.

There are some good and some bad aspects to this romantic-comedy film.  On the plus side, there was some fairly witty dialog exchanges in this movie, mostly surrounding balls, fish, and dark chocolate interiors.  Pfeiffer and Clooney are also individually very charismatic performers, and they're definitely very watchable here.  Unfortunately (here comes the minus side), Pfeiffer and Clooney together don't add up to any smashing romantic duo.  There's something missing (or unexplored) in the chemistry between these two characters, and the film suffers for it.  The children's role in this film also just gets average marks--yes, sometimes they're cute, but mostly they're just disruptive.  I can, for instance, handle the "child stains mom's blouse" routine once, but twice in one film is a bit much.  Similarly, I can sit through one "Oh my God, I lost my child" scene in one film, but twice is, again, a bit much.

Overall, One Fine Day comes in as a pleasant but otherwise average film.  One part romance, and one part adventure in babysitting, all within the span of one day.  I think a little more emphasis on the former, and less on the latter, would've improved this film, but overall it was...okay.

gillianlover@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "These two stars (Clooney and Pfeiffer) have amazing chemistry, and the film rattled along at such a fast pace that there was barely time to take a breath. The pace certainly helped it, along with two talented young children, a talented supporting cast and a warm, loveable heart. It never became cheesy or obvious...you knew that they were going to fall in love, but what happens along the way was original and fun viewing. 4 stars was my initial reaction, but after multiple viewings, I had to bump it up." (9/2/99)

CRose111@aol.com gives this movie  stars: "I loved absolutly everything about this movie. George and Michelle were great. Those little kids were so cute! The story line was good also. Even the soundtrack/music selection was good that they used. The only thing I might think of switching would be the ending, with the people on the couch just sleeping, it seemed like maybe they could have gone on with that. But then I guess it wouldn't be One Fine Day it would be like One Fine Week or something. All in all this is deffinatly a good movie." (12/14/98)

Zippy gives this movie  stars: "I thought that this movie was one of the best because Michelle Pfiefer is one of my favorite actresses!! Pfieffer and Clooney gave a great performance in this. Although I wished the ending was different. They should of had a more romantic scene. If anyone is in for a romantic, warm, sweet movie then this is a movie you have to see!!!" (10/15/98)

Peninah Kinyanjui gives this movie  stars: "I am 16 years old and I think that this is the greatest movie ever I have watched it about 63 times since the day I heard about it that I almost know every single word that George clooney is going to say. He is my favorite actor because he seems so real when he is acting and makes the movie to appear like a reality. Even though I gave it five stars I think it desearves more than that because it's my favorite movie and has my favorite actor and the actors and actresses know how to act and also make it funny and interesting." (9/25/98)

Janeway gives this movie  stars: "I thought it was a good movie, full of humor. I can't say it's one of my favorites, but there was terrific chemistry between the two characters, and I think it brought out the best in it." (8/25/98)

snoww14@flashnet.com gives this movie  stars: "This was an excellent movie, but I wanted it to end differently! More emphasis should have been placed on the romance between George Clooney (Jack Taylor) and Michelle Pfeiffer (Melanie Parker). They would be a great couple if only they had been given a better chance! Overall, I loved One Fine Day, and I would definitely recommend it, especially to anybody who is a hopeless romantic like myself." (1/18/97)
