"Why do men feel they can justify death?"

THE PATRIOT (R)

Reviewed July 4, 2000 - Check out The Patriot Website.

Studio Synopsis: Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) is a reluctant hero who is swept into the American Revolution when the war reaches his home and threatens his family. A hero of the fierce French and Indian conflict, Martin had renounced fighting forever to raise his family in peace. But when the British arrive at his South Carolina home and endanger what he holds most dear, Martin takes up arms alonside his idealistic patriot son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), and leads a brave rebel Militia into battle against a relentless and overwhelming English army. In the process, he discovers the only way to protect his family is to fight for a young nation's freedom.

Fuzzydog Review: Highly reminiscent of Mel Gibson's brilliant film Braveheart, The Patriot once again brings us Gibson as a great warrior and battlefield leader who inspires a ragtag group of men to stunning military victories.  This is a film of extreme violence, with battle scenes filled with lots of blood, gore and death.  Those with queasy stomachs are warned.  At the same time, however, The Patriot is a film with a heart...a film about family, friendship, loyalty, and (of course) fighting for what you believe in.  Mel Gibson gives one of his best performances for this epic drama, and he is surrounded by a supporting cast that more than holds its own.  Though not as inspired (or inspiring) as either Braveheart or Glory--two war films that approach the honor of being considered "classics"--The Patriot is sprinkled with enough magical cinematic moments to make a viewing worth your while.  One could certainly do a lot worse on this 4th of July weekend...  :)

narin54@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "I personally think that the movie was as great as I had thought it would be. It was sad, sweet, funny, every thing. The Patriot was every thing and more. But the only part I didn't like was that his two sons died. All in all, it was great. The actors are believiable, the setting was amazing. There is so much more to say. I love it." (7/5/00)
