"It worked!!"

PAY IT FORWARD (PG-13)

Reviewed October 29, 2000 - Check out the Pay it Forward Website.

Studio Synopsis: Pay it Forward is a feel-good family story about a social studies teacher, Eugene Simonet (Kevin Spacey), who challenges his 11-year-old students to come up with an idea that will change the world. Trevor McKinney (Haley Joel Osment) decides to step up to the plate. His idea is a game called "pay it forward." In the game, every time somebody does a favor for you, you "pay it forward" to three other people. Surprisingly, the idea seems to work, helping his teacher to come out of his shell and reveal a dark past, and bringing his mother, Arlene McKinney (Helen Hunt)--who works two jobs to keep their household afloat--new freedom.

Fuzzydog Review: An emotionally manipulative film with good intentions and great acting, Pay it Forward offers the audience something that is simultaneously thought-provoking and shallow.  The core idea, of three big favors radiating outwards and potentially changing the world, is a great foundation for a story.  And, with the charismatic performances of its lead performers (Spacey, Hunt and Osment), there's no question that this film gives you a lot to like.  Still, in the hands of director Mimi Leder, there's something that doesn't quite gel as this film progresses...a lack of cohesion that never seems to ground this film in the way that it needs to be grounded.  Is it good?  Sometimes.  Is it great?  No.  Fans of Spacey, Hunt and/or Osment may find a trip to the theatres worthwhile just for the performances.  For everyone else, this may be closer to decent home video material...take your pick... :-)
