SIX DAYS, SEVEN NIGHTS (PG-13)

Reviewed June 14, 1998 - Check out the Six Days, Seven Nights Website.

There's been all this buzz lately about Anne Heche's new role opposite Harrison Ford in Six Days, Seven Nights.  Currently (as of this writing) best known for her lesbian relationship with comedienne Ellen Degeneris, Heche stars as Robin Monroe, a New York magazine exec. who finds herself stranded on a deserted tropical island with inter-island plane pilot Quinn Harris (Harrison Ford).  How these two wind up alone on a deserted island is almost immaterial...just trust me, they get there.  Once there of course, adventure, comedy, and romance abound as the two plan their escape.  That's it, that's all.

Directed by Ivan Reitman, Six Days, Seven Nights is pure comedic fluff, and it is indeed very...ummm...fluffy.  The dialog is light, the plot is predictable, and there's not much in the film that would qualify as truly memorable.  Those of you who are Harrison Ford fans will be pleased to see one of Ford's most relaxed and intentionally silly performances in recent memory.  Heche, for her part, is sufficiently cute and spunky in this role, making for a potentially good pairing between the two. Unfortunately, there's not much else to this film that makes it stand out in any particular way.  It's a few laughs, a lot of scenery, and one strange plot twist involving pirates (no kidding...).

As you'd expect, Ford and Heche end up as a couple, leaving Heche's on-screen boyfriend Frank (David Schwimmer) on the sidelines.  Given the huge age difference between Ford and Heche, and the fact that Heche doesn't date guys in real life, some may find this romantic pairing slightly unbelievable.  If you can accept it though, then you've got a watchable comedy that's good for a few decent laughs.

Responses from cyberspace--thanks for writing!

jessfrogy@prodigy.net gives this movie  stars: "the movie was alright it was funny during the crash scene and the action scenes were ok but the end was so predictable" (8/19/99)

sandavel@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "Oh to be Harrison Ford, there are obvious perks occasionally to being an movie star, especially on the beach after dropping off the headland. The film was slightly contrived, especially about ALoha Airlines, but I fell in love with Anne, and I was happy about the ending, I do like happy endings. Did not like the David Swhimmer character, was predictable, a real dork in the picture in anycase, perhaps this is what they wanted. Obviously Anne and Harrison had a real spark, I wonder what it would have been like if it had been the other way around, with Ford the 'AAA' personality from New York and Heche the 'I like a simple life' character. Anne's current personal relationship is not relevant to the story, it's a story, and although I would like to meet her one day, dream on David, I wish her success in her carreer and her personal life. Post the comments, that's OK" (1/18/99)

cmarmol@euler.umg.edu.gt gives this movie  stars: "The movie it is just very funny. I like very much the girl who acts like Quinny´s girlfriend. I think this movie complies with all the expectations." (11/3/98)

Janeway gives this movie  stars: "I just didn't like it. Harrison Ford is a great actor, but in my opinion, not even he could bring this movie up. The plot was lame and unrealistic. I went expecting a comedy, and found out that all the funny parts were used in the commercial. I thought it was a total waste of time and money. Be warned." (8/25/98)

Dave gives this movie  stars: "Some of the scenes were funny. But I think the movie was lacking a final punch at the end to tie it up." (8/1/98)

smerci@mail.global.net.mt gives this movie  stars: "It's a wonderful movie...enjoyed it from the first minute up to the very last...Harrison Ford is simply gorgeous, more than ever...worth seeing." (7/25/98)

RButalid@hct.ac.ae gives this movie  stars: "Harrison Ford is the greatest actor of all time!(Well apart from Tommy Lee Jones)" (7/25/98)

David gives this movie  stars: "Uses a variety of genres well - Comedy, Romance, Adventure - unlike other films like that. The suspense with the pirates was 'edge-of-the- seat stuff' and the comedy was pure laughs and well thought out. The Romance was excellent as well and you felt for the scenes with it. The main actors were brilliant - Harrison Ford, even at his old age is still 'The Man' with a top performance, but Anne Heche stole the show without a doubt. Her use of comedy was brilliant, depicting the typical work-o-holic. She is one of the bright new stars. Only one actor was a tiny disappointing - David Schwimmer, who every scene acts like a wimp and even on his strong lines says it with no emphasis. Nevertheless he did come up with the best line of the film; in the first plane, describing the bikini, " I thought it was an eyepatch !" A top film, with laughs, fun, and suspense with enjoyable actors and a good story to fit in. Excellent !!" (7/14/98)

Chelle gives this movie  star: "I gave this movie one star because zero was not an option. The movie seemed to last for at least six days and seven nights. Everyone needs to get over the fact that Anne Heche is gay. An actor is not playing themself therefore the fact that she is gay is irrelevant. When A straight actor plays that they are gay people accept it. But, let me get off my high horse and get back to the movie. I accept that romance movies are generally predictable but this movie was downright sappy. I new the entire movie as soon as the characters were on screen. Harrison Ford really needs to start acting again. He was a good actor in the past, now he is relying on his name to get roles and to get people in the theater. Thank goodness the scenery was so pretty or this movie would have been a complete disaster." (7/14/98)

scotta@cableinet.co.uk gives this movie  stars: "This film wasn't too bad, I suppose. The biggest problem was that everytime the girl did anything vaugely romantic you couldn't help thinking - hang on, she's a lesbian! (My girlfriend told me just as the film started) - I would agree with the review, but I was a bit disappointed with Ford as he usually manages to get a bit more presence on the screen than he managed this time (bits of it being remenisent of Mosquito coast). The biggest thing about this film is that as you leave the cinema you are left thinking - 'hang on, nothing happened!'." (7/9/98)

cgi9170@icepr.com says: "movies are usually fantazies, escapes and/or flights of fancy, except documentaries or biographies etc. Apparently your reviewer thinks this movie is real life or he is extremely bigotted!" (6/22/98) (Apologies if the above review sounded 'bigotted' in any way...that is NOT the intent of this page.)
