"I see dead people..."

THE SIXTH SENSE (PG-13)

Reviewed August 22, 1999 - Check out The Sixth Sense Website.

Studio Synopsis: In this chilling psychological thriller, eight-year-old Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) is haunted by a dark secret: He is visited by ghosts. A helpless and reluctant channel, Cole is terrified by threatening visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. Confused by his paranormal powers, Cole is too young to understand his purpose and too terrified to tell anyone about his torment, except child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis). As Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the ominous truth about Cole's supernatural abilities, the consequence for client and therapist is a jolt that awakens them both to something harrowing -- and unexplainable.

Fuzzydog Review: A little over a year ago, Bruce Willis starred in Mercury Rising, where he played "the adult" working to help a child in trouble.  Unfortunately, that particular effort was quite forgettable, and I ended my review of that film by saying: "I'm just hoping that Bruce Willis finds a better plot for himself next time around..."

Well folks, it looks like Bruce has found his better plot, and it's in The Sixth Sense, where he again pairs up with a young boy in distress.  In what is one of the most engaging, suspenseful, and yes, scary films in recent memory, The Sixth Sense packs a tremendous amount of drama in its 107 minute runtime.  Haley Joel Osment is absolutely brilliant as the troubled child, and Willis delivers a nicely restrained performance that complements the film's mood effectively.  There aren't any big car chases or gunfights in this film (you almost always expect that from Bruce Willis), but instead what you will find is large doses of suspense and the supernatural, plus a few stunning surprises along the way.

Before seeing this film, I was told that the less you know about it, the more you'll enjoy it.  Now that I've seen it, I'll have to agree.  Just go see it...and enjoy.

David Rogers gives this movie  stars: "Very, very predictable. Bruce Willis's acting sucked, as always! The kid's acting was no better! The were plenty of mistakes. But at least it was better than Armageddon, 1998's attempt at a disaster movie which was a disaster period! It started out slow, especialy during the opening credits. I mean, come on! You should have given us something to watch during them! Godzilla did it! Wing Commander did it! Why not you? After I watched this, the first thin that I said to myself was "I'm sleeping good tonight!", it was not a scary movie. You want real thrillers, rent Jaws, Holloween, and Alligator! Man, Hollywood doesn't make movies like that anymore (although they try to make cheesy rip-offs like Deep Blue Sea, Friday the 13th, and Lake Placid). Not a thriller, a drama maybe, but not a thriller." (5/6/00)

adoosje@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "This is the best movie I've seen since -say- Silence of the Lambs. No! It's better! You really HAVE to see it twice. First time I saw it I was on holiday in Canada. Didn't know about the movie at all but people advised me to go, so I went and I was completely stunned!! So, don't let people tell you what the movie is about: just go! AD, the Netherlands" (1/2/00)

gillianlover@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "Subtlety is the key here: no Hollywood explosions, special effects or action sequences. Just a really scary film where the actors carry the whole film merely on their interractions. Good cinematography and an intense plot aid the film also." (10/30/99)
