SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER AND UNCUT (R)

Reviewed July 4, 1999 - Check out the South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut Website.

It's irreverent, it's over-the-top, it's filled with badly-animated characters with very foul mouths!

Yes folks, it's South Park, this time on the big screen and unfettered by the content restrictions (language, violence, nudity, etc.) of its television roots at Comedy Central.  In this silver-screen musical version of the enormously popular television program, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have gone absolutely berzerk with our cartoon friends Stan, Cartman, Kyle and Kenny, and the result is (believe it or not) one wickedly funny film!

The plot, as you'd expect, is a far-fetched one, involving a war between the United States and Canada brought on by two foul-mouthed Canadian cartoon characters named Terrence and Philip.  When, after watching a Terrence and Philip film, the children of South Park go into an uncontrollable cursing spree, the adults of the town and the entire nation (led by Kyle's mom) decide to take action, taking Terrence and Philip hostage and quickly scheduling their execution for "war crimes."  Naturally, it is then up to Stan, Cartman, Kyle and their friends to rescue Terrence and Philip, stop the war, and prevent both Satan and Saddam Hussein from leaving the underworld to rule the Earth in an extended reign of darkness...

Didn't I say it was far-fetched?

As series fans already know, far-fetched and outrageous is perfectly fine in South Park, and this film simply confirms that fact.  Make no mistake, South Park is crude, rude and lewd, and it fully deserves its MPAA "R" rating.  At the same time, however, this film also has many moments of wonderfully mischievous creativity, most notably in the series of hilarious musical numbers contained within it.  All at once a parody of Disney-esque animated films and Broadway musicals such as Les Miserables, this film contains a load of twisted musical numbers, with practically every character having at least one chance to croon.  Frankly, I wasn't prepared for this almost unmitigated songfest, but as soon as I realized what this film was up to, then its musical aspect became a very welcome addition.

South Park makes fun of almost everything (cartoons, children, ethnic groups, society, and South Park itself), and often hits the mark.  Bottom line: if you think you can put up with the foul language and often crude humor, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut is a film to see.  Anyway, haven't you always been curious to see what happens to Kenny when he dies??  : )

realwendy@yahoo.com gives this movie  stars: "This movie was a revelation of the injustices in the world today. It's packed with hypocrisy, lewdness... and it's damn funny too! Everyone was raving about Austin Powers 2 and his Mini-me and that dumbass kid who had sex with the pie in American Pie this summer...WHY?! This movie has ten times the plot that those movies ever did, and all ten plots were going on at once! Trey Parker and Matt Stone have my twisted sense of humor, and this movie proved it. Although the musical numbers did become a little tired near the end, it was all so energetic, it's hard to not like the movie based on a couple of little songs. Anyone too sensitive to take consistent bashing of all ethnic/minority/age/religious groups, DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. All of those with the sense of humor, go right ahead and laugh your f***ing ass off." (11/13/99)

jenott@azstarnet.com gives this movie  stars: "I was laughing my ass off for real! This is a great movie! (#2 on my list by the way.) A comedy, a musical, and South Park all in one. Who could ask for anything more?" (7/27/99)

lushbabe@innocent.com gives this movie  stars: "It's funny, rude and very sick, but it doesn't live up to the series. Too much of Teerance and Phillip and not enough of the old faves like Mr Hanky for instance! I could have come up with a South Park movie 10 times better" (7/25/99)

David gives this movie  stars: "Well what can I say....after being blasted with swear words, seen Terrence fart on Philip, seen Satan masturbating, seen heaven as some boob-fest, heard God get paid out profusely, seen big gay al's big gay privates, had sadam's private parts and dildos shoved in my face, seen Satan and Saddam get it on in bed, seen a movie where they sing Uncle Fu**er, seen Canada get paid out every second, seen vomit from stan marsh, seen bill gates shot, seen conan obrien commit suicide, seen a racist army, seen cartman have electric bolts from his palms and seen some German porn involving Mrs Cartman , while seeing Kenny's insides get taken out....all i have to say is ....HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH This movie rocks ! Its drags near the end, but its sooo offensive that it's outrageously funny !" (7/18/99)

gillianlover@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "What makes "South Park: The Movie" so provocative and exciting is that in its offensiveness it can create humour which makes you feel guilty laughing at it when you know you shouldn't be. It never sagged in the middle or by the end to the point where it became boring...it held itself quite well. The musical element was an excellent idea, making it different from the television episodes while at the same time stressing some interesting thoughts on the hypocritical nature of censorship in society...why ban images or language on screen when people use it in real life situations anyway? I think the "Gross-out" factor worked better than in "There's Something About Mary" as it is expected from the likes of South Park. Its sheer audacity makes it an interesting film alone." (7/17/99)
