THE KID (PG)

Reviewed July 9, 2000 - Check out The Kid Website.

Studio Synopsis: If you had the chance to meet yourself as an 8-year-old child, would that kid be happy with who you turned out to be? In Russ Duritz's (Bruce Willis) case, the answer is a resounding "No!" Russ somehow finds his life as a successful "image consultant" turned upside down when he magically meets Rusty (Spencer Breslin)--himself as an 8-year-old child. Rusty is a sweet, but slightly geeky, pudgy little kid who is not at all happy with who he turns out to be --a 40-year-old "loser" without a wife or a dog. Ironically, the kid helps Russ to learn about himself and remember his dreams, in order to become the grown-up he wants to be.

Fuzzydog Review: If you've seen the preview trailers for Disney's The Kid, you may have gotten a ho-hum kind of feeling about the film and its plot concept.  Bruce Willis' undeniable starpower aside, the whole "grumpy adult finds the kid inside" story has been done a hundred times before, and there's no reason to think that The Kid delivers anything new or better.  Well, surprise surprise...with John Turteltaub (While You Were SleepingPhenomenon) in the director's seat and Bruce Willis at his comedic best, The Kid manages to be one of those films that transcends its mediocre preview trailers.  Yes, this movie is funnier, friendlier, sassier, and much more entertaining than you would expect.  It's not perfect mind you, but it's surprisingly good and, after a while, a bit hard to resist.  Lily Tomlin is hilarious in her role as Russ Duritz's secretary, and newcomer Spencer Breslin is extremely likeable as Duritz's 8-year-old self.  In classic Disney form, this is a "kids' movie" that carries more than enough punch to please adults.  Needless to say, if you're up for a good-natured summer fantasy/comedy, The Kid is a film worth considering...give it a chance, it just might surprise you.  :-)
