The Mummy (PG-13)

Reviewed May 10, 1999 - Check out The Mummy Website.

A remake of Universal Picture's classic 1932 horror film, The Mummy is a fun, fast-paced, campy, and surprisingly enjoyable film by Director/Writer Stephen Sommers.  In it, a small and somewhat marginally-qualified band of explorers set out to find the lost Egyptian city of Hamunaptra, an ancient site said to hold untold treasures.  The explorers, comprised of soldier of fortune Nick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser), Egyptologist/librarian Evelyn Carnarvon (Rachel Weisz) and her wily brother Jonathan (John Hannah), are of course only after Hamunaptra's treasures.  Instead, however, they (with the help of a rival exploration team from America) inadvertently manage to unleash a 3,000-year-old Egyptian curse, raising the spirit of dreaded High Priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo, a.k.a. "the mummy") from the dead, and threatening to bring a reign of ungodly terror upon the Earth.

And you thought you were having a bad day...

Admittedly, The Mummy isn't something that could ever pass as a "thinking man's movie"...that's just not its point.  With scene upon scene of beautifully realized Egyptian landscapes, and an assault of wonderfully executed special effects (all courtesy of the folks at Industrial Light and Magic), The Mummy is simply one big glob of eye-candy, and I for one enjoyed the entire overblown experience.  Sure, The Mummy has its problems--logic gaps, weak character development, plot twists that defy believability--but somehow it's tongue-in-cheek, wink-at-the-audience affability carries it through, and I somehow found myself appreciating the wackiness of it all.  In some ways, this film feels like Indiana Jones meets Keystone Cops, and that's not an entirely bad combination.  Frazier, Weisz, and Hannah all do a great job of maintaining The Mummy's campy tone, adding to the fun factor of this imperfect but nevertheless watchable "popcorn flick."  If you're in the mood for this kind of horror/adventure/romance/comedy free-for-all, then The Mummy just may be your ticket...

mystix@pacbell.net gives this movie  stars: "It was excellent. I confess to going into the film expecting a horror movie, but I was surprised. At first I was disappointed, but few movies actually make me laugh out loud, and so I -quickly- was won over... both by the movie's banter, and, I have to confess, the blatant hotness of Rick O'Connell, and Imhotep. Wheeeeeoo. Yummy. Wonderful movie, I highly reccomend it!" (4/12/01)

kamla00@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "The Mummy is a wonderful movie with action, humour a bit of romance. The cast and crew did one amazing job in making this film a big succes. I have seen it twice and both times I was stunned by the special effects and the characters. All the characters, especially Imhotep, were impressive." (8/21/99)

Lakota@prodigy.net gives this movie  stars: "I give it five stars, because I took my 8-year old twin sons to see it, and they loved it. There's nothing in it that would give them nightmares or bad ideas- there is plenty of obesiance to the old Universal monster movies and plenty of "horror" accomplished by inference, shadows and reaction shots instead of sensory assault. And, it is goofy and a lot of fun. Well done!" (7/29/99)

Shannax@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "I have never seen such a fantastic film of adventure since Indiana Jones. I think the purpose of this remake was to provide an enjoyable moment, it was never supposed to be serious in the first place, and that was achieved.Congratulations to all actors who played their characters so well, but I must say that the High Priest has definitely caught my eye." (7/26/99)

Sklaw_Aras@yahoo.com gives this movie  stars: "I give The Mummy 3 stars for trying. It reminded me of an R.L.Stine book I once read. I did enjoy it though, I thought it was a fun movie. Plus Brenden Fraser is hot. -Sara" (7/21/99)

henley111@aol.com gives this movie  stars: " The Mummy is a must see movie! The acting was brilliant and what what made the film even more believeable was how they recreated everything in the beginning. The other special effects, like the sandstorm and how they showed Imhotep not fully regenerated, were also amazing. You might expect this movie to be very scary and more like the usual 90s horror flicks, but you will be laughing continuously with only a few stops to be scared out of your wits! Hey, Brendan Frasier and John Hanna are in it! Why not check it out?" (7/11/99)

gillianlover@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "When will Hollywood come to understand that good CGI effects do not make a movie scary let alone make a good movie. The romance was so cheesy and the dialogue so ludicrous that it made me wonder whether with a better script this film could have really worked: after all, it had a fast pace and some decent action, as well as excellent landscapes. But this is just another movie which is all beauty, no substance." (6/30/99)

thetonic@aol.com gives this movie  star: "Unfortunately this system would not allow me to give less than one star to this pitiful slimy piece of dung. Never in my life have I ever been so offended not only by blatant computer animation but a script with such lack of creativity a pre-schooler could look down upon it. Purely for the masses of brainless movie-goers. Even its vain attempt at camp is a failure as most camp films make this look like a Teletubies video, that has bad tracking." (6/8/99)

hmccorvey@tyler.net gives this movie  stars: "Whoever did the advertising for this movie ought to be put in jail for "false advertising." All of the previews show a serious, horror story, but this mess was a darned slap-stick, Looney-toons show. If not for the special effects (which were excellent), this movie would have been a joke. Its not worth the ticket price. Wait for it to come out on video." (6/4/99)
