TOY STORY 2 (G)

Reviewed November 27, 1999 - Check out the Toy Story 2 Website.

Studio Synopsis: Toy Story 2 is the exciting, all-new sequel to the landmark 1995 computer-animated blockbuster from Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios. This time around, the fun and adventure continue when Andy goes off to summer camp and the toys are left to their own devices. Things shift into high gear when an obsessive toy collector kidnaps Woody (Tom Hanks) -- who hasn't the slightest clue that he is a greatly valued collectible. It's now up to Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and the gang from Andy's room -- Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles), Slinky Dog (Jim Varney), Rex (Wallace Shawn), and Hamm (John Ratzenberger) -- to spring into action and save their pal from winding up a museum piece. There are plenty of thrills as the toys get into one predicament after another in their daring race to get home before Andy does.

Fuzzydog Review: Well...wow.  Wow, wow, wow is all I can say.  It's nice to be able to go into a movie with extremely high expectations, and then have those expectations met and exceeded.  Toy Story 2, the sequel to the amazingly popular film from 1995, is everything the first one was and more.  The animation is excellent, the voice-over work is excellent, and the story itself is brimming with both humor and heart.  The plot, involving a rescue mission by Buzz and the gang to save Woody from becoming a museum piece, is somewhat reminiscent of the original; however, this film is also infused with the kind of depth that easily keeps one glued to the screen.  From humorous insider jabs at everything from Disney to Jurassic Park and The Empire Strikes Back, to a heartbreaking musical sequence on lost love (sung by Sarah McLachlan) that absolutely silenced a crowded theater packed with both kids and adults, what Toy Story 2 delivers in its less than 90-minute runtime is pure magic.  This film is at least the equal of the original Toy Story, and in a number of ways, surpasses it.  See it and enjoy...

The only thing missing from the first was a lot fo big toy licenses, but since the first one was so good everybody wanted there toy in the sequal! I also think the second had a slightly "thicker" plot and more thought out story line." (6/17/00)

webguy@gci-net.com gives this movie  stars: "Funnier than the first, more action than the first. And if you have already seen it in theatres when it first came out, go again to watch the ending credits - those credits were funnier than the movie! I had seen the movie when it first came out and it was excellent, the visuals are more than amazing, the cone scene had me on the floor laughing... then for fun I went to see it again at the cheap $2 theatre and I laughed... but there was more - - - the credits!! Holy cow, I laughed so hard that I had to go see the movie two more times in that same week to catch what I missed in the credits! Great family entertainment! Don't miss out on this film even if you think cartoons are just for kids!" (5/8/00)

travis@toadhall.ilrlib.cornell.edu gives this movie  stars: "I think that this movie was even better than the first, with great animation and a bunch of new characters. The scenes in Al's Toy Barn and the one with Zurg and the Utility Belt Buzz on top of the elevator were great. One of my favorite scenes was the one where Rex was playing that video game." (12/15/99)

stranger_1981@hotmail.com gives this movie  stars: "The original Toy Story was one of the best movies of 1995, and now comes the sequel, that is almost of the same caliber. I loved this movie. It is a comic thrill ride, that keeps up high energy, right to the very end. It has newer, sharper animation, great dialogue, and some serious backdrops. Not to mention the great cast of characters from the first movie, with some new additions. The movie is a thrilling adventure, as the toys set off to find Woody. There is an exciting highway scene, where the toys are underneath street cones, a battle on top of an elevator between a different Buzz Lightyear, and the evil Zerg, and an exciting escape from a plane, while it is taking off, in the end. It is just one exciting thrill after another. The movie is also funny, in the same way the original was, for kids and adults to enjoy. I loved the parallels between Star Wars and this movie. You don't have to look hard, cause you can't miss it. But the movie also touches on a lot of feelings in this movie. Especially the feelings of toys. How hard it is for a toy to watch his owner grow up, and neglect him. How hard it is for a toy to accept being stored away, or sold, or damaged, or thrown in the trash. The movie also shows the guilt that young children feel for toys, when they lose them, damage them, or leave them at home for too long. But besides a great thrill ride, a lot of great comedy, and touching moments, the movie shows how advanced that computer animation is getting. The look and feel of computer animation gives you a sense of freedom like no other animation. And this movie is cutting edge. It creates a universe that is rich with color, and alive for freedom. The characters are not just painted on top of some back drops. They are occupying space, and are free to do anything. Toy Story was a spectacular movie, and so is the sequel. But the sequel is not quite as good as the original, but it is still a wonderful film, for kids and adults. It is alive, right to the very end, with thrills, comedy, and feeling." (12/10/99)
