THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS (PG-13) ****.

What can I say...I really liked this movie, and the only reason I can give you is Janeane Garofalo. Cats and Dogs plays as another modern-day remake of Cyrano de Bergerac, with Garofalo playing Cyrano to Uma Thurman's Noelle, the supposedly drop-dead, head-turn gorgeous gal that no man could resist.  The short version: Garofalo plays Dr. Abby Barnes, a radio talk show host who gets a call from this guy (Brian) who, after talking to her, finds he really likes her and wants to meet her.  Abby is too embarrased to meet Brian because she doesn't look, well, like Uma Thurman (Noelle).  So Abby has Brian meet Noelle (instead of Abby).  Brian falls in love with Noelle physically, but also falls in love with Abby intellectually (he gets to visit Abby's intellect--and other parts of her--over the phone). Oh, the tangled web we weave!!

The truth is, Uma Thurman never really pulls it off as the woman-of-every-man's-dream in this movie.  I guess the appropriate word would be...ditzy?  Garofalo, on the other hand, comes across with loads of charisma.  Maybe not your classic beauty, but charming enough to break the very very cute barrier.  As you'd expect, the movie does the same.  Yes it's cute, yes it's fun, yes it's light...hey, it's A MOVIE, and it's worth seeing if you haven't already.

IMPRESSIONS

Cool Casting: Janeane Garofalo

Best scene: there was this one particular phone conversation...

Most distressing scene: that whole turtle affair...uughh.

Hey: does anyone really think Uma Thurman is cute?

dante_maria@worldnet.att.net gives this movie ***** stars: "This has been the funniest trio I have seen so far. If there is anyway they could make movie with Mr. Ben Chaplin and Uma or Ben Chaplin and Jeneane it would be fantastic, awsome plot , talk about not your typical romantic story, there is more reality to it than anything else it is predictable in a way ,but excellent. This movie does not make you numb , It tends to captivate you in watching it over and over again, if the rating will go up to 10 I will rate as ten. I wish I could see more of these three especially Ben Chaplin" (11/5/00)

The plot was great, the character development was excellent, the script was well written, and the cast (Janeane Garofalo, Ben Chaplin, and Uma Thurman) did a terrific job! However, I think that Janeane Garofalo's wardrobe for the movie could have been a LOT better." (8/22/99)

JCcrazy@aol.com gives this movie ***** stars: "Cats And Dogs was a great movie and I truly love Garofalo's humor. It deserves all of the stars for unique plot and a twist from the commonplace romantic plot." (5/17/98)

Qtee3pt14 gives this movie ***** stars: "this is a five only because I can't go any higher. I love Cerano DeBergeac (the movie and the book) and I was happy for the female to get a chance to screw with the dude. It was a very moving movie and I was reduced to tears many times. This is a romance that could rock that dinky tug boat (Titanic) any day." (3/30/98)

David gives this movie **** stars: "Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.brilliant etc. etc. I just loved Garofalo and Hank. Just one think though. Is Uma Thurman prettier than Dr. Abby? I don't think so." (2/7/98)

atresnasari@worldbank.org gives this movie ***** stars: "It's not a kind of movie which we have to think hard about the next scene. We don't have to think hard about it because it's so close with the reality. It made me laugh a bit, sigh a bit, but not cry! Maybe that's part of the reason why I really like the movie." (11/26/96)
