"Visualize and attack!!"

THE WATERBOY (PG-13)

Reviewed November 9, 1998 - Check out The Waterboy Website.

Forgive me for enjoying this movie as much as I did...but I did...

In The Waterboy, Adam Sandler plays Bobby Boucher, a stuttering, often teased 31-year old who has been the University of Louisiana football team's waterboy for 18 years.  Living with his overbearing "Mama" (Kathy Bates), good-natured Bobby has grown up sheltered from the world, content simply with his role in providing "high quality H20" to the team.  Unfortunately, the team (and its coach) thinks he's an idiot, and after one particularly distracting scuffle at practice one day, Bobby is fired.  Oh, no.  What to do, what to do.

Desperate to be a waterboy once again, Bobby approaches dejected Coach Klein (Henry Winkler), who has led the South Central Louisiana State University (SCLSU) Mud Dogs to a whopping 40 straight defeats.  Upon joining this new team, however, Bobby faces the same pathetic treatment.  Picked on, roughed up, and constantly insulted, it looks like he's in for another rough ride.  But then, after Coach Klein encourages Bobby to defend himself, Bobby lets loose...and BOOM!!

Hey, the guy can hit!  All of a sudden, the Mud Dogs have an astounding new defensive tackle and a brand new leash on life, as SCLSU begins a streak of victories that culminates in a "Bourbon Bowl" bid against (guess who?) Bobby's old team from the University of Louisiana

Alright, enough about the plot.  The Waterboy is undoubtedly one of the silliest and most sophomoric films released this year, and the plot isn't much to speak of.  After all, with Adam Sandler at the helm, it's never about plot (or acting, or character development, or cinematography).  Instead, it's about wacky, cartoonish characters who are so strange, they're funny.  Let's see, naturally there's Bobby with his stuttering Cajun/Southern accent.  Then there's Mama (Bates), who thinks everyone is the devil and regularly cooks reptiles (snakes, frogs, and alligators) for dinner.  Then there's SCLSU's assistant coach (Blake Clark), who speaks in some incomprehensible accent.  Oh, and let's not forget Bobby's love interest Vicki Vallencourt (Fairuza Balk), a dark beauty with a really disturbing violent streak.

The list continues but by now you probably get the point.  This is a silly film full of silly people, and if you're in that kind of mood, The Waterboy is a ridiculously funny picture.  Sure, it's not a perfect film and its humor often misses as much as it hits, but between the Southern backwater references and the outrageous football violence, there's enough here for Sandler to work with for The Waterboy's 90-minute runtime.

Just try not to analyze it too much, and don't be surprised when you laugh...

summerwyatt@yahoo.com gives this movie  star: "Just awful! All the stupid people in america all seemed to think it was funny and charming. To anybody who laughed even once in this movie, I question your stupidity. The whole movie is one joke over and over and over and over and over again. If you want to laugh go see 'Theres something about mary' or rent 'Kingpin', these are 2 very funny movies with a plot, which waterboy lacks in both aspects." (3/14/99)

jenamarie@deskmedia.com gives this movie  star: "I would've picked lower, but it wasn't a choice. I apologize in advance to the people out there that liked the movie, but it stunk. It was a waste of money. I left halfway through the movie it was so terrible! It wasn't funny, in fact the whole thing insulted the viewer's intelligence. I can't stand that in a movie. I'm sure there are some peopleout there who like it, but for those of you who haven't seen it, don't. It's not worth the time or the brain cells." (1/9/99)
